On Storytelling and Why It Matters

On Storytelling and Why It Matters

The last few months have marked a big turning point in my photography journey. After a lot of soul-searching, I finally came to terms with what I want my style to be and my photos to tell. The word ‘storytelling’ has become increasingly important for me. I have realized I have been stuck on ‘pretty’ for way too long. I do love a beautiful timeless portrait of course, but that just isn’t me. What I really want is to preserve actual memories for myself and for other people. I have some gorgeous glamour portraits of myself, all made up and so, but as much as I think they are beautiful, they don’t mean the same to me as some photos of me when I look like an absolute hot mess but I am genuinely happy.

Since I have had this realization, I have started to experiment more with my photography on a daily basis. Portraying my baby provided me with the perfect opportunity to do that. Once I have collected enough photos, I am planning to print this series in an album.

As you can see, they are just natural moments from our daily life in a creative unposed documentary style. I would like to do more ‘a day in the life’ sessions like this, just following the families in their natural environment for a short time. Portraying real life as it is happening, finding the beauty in it without forcing it. There are so many details we take for granted on a daily basis, but they might be worth preserving for our future selves who will find them meaningful.

If you would like something like that, go ahead and contact me: berni@bernipalumbo.com.

P.S. Personally, I have decided to keep this selection mostly black and white for a more timeless and minimal look. Of course, there are plenty of really colourful photos too! 😉
